Tealing–Westfield project marks key step in Scotland's clean energy expansion, boosting grid capacity and delivering $9.7 million in community benefits

TEALING, Scotland – SSEN Transmission has secured Section 37 Electricity Act permission to upgrade the overhead power line between Tealing and Westfield with new conductors and increased voltage. This project represents a significant milestone in Scotland's ongoing grid modernization program.

The project will upgrade the existing approximately 37-kilometer 275-kilovolt line to a 400-kilovolt operating standard, increasing grid capacity to accommodate growing renewable energy generation. Works include replacing conductors, insulators, and fittings, while reinforcing tower foundations and steel structures to enhance long-term operational reliability.

Construction is scheduled to commence in 2026, with local contractors including Dundee Plant already engaged in preparatory work. Main contractor Balfour Beatty will invite local suppliers to participate in the construction phase, further supporting regional employment and supply chain development.

The Tullin-Westfield project will also provide approximately $9.7 million (£7.4 million) in community benefit funding. Combined with the recently approved Allis-Tullin line replacement project, the two initiatives will collectively deliver over $13 million (£10 million) in investment to the local area.

Gregor Stirton, Project Manager at Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Transmission, stated: “These upgrades are vital for strengthening Scotland's transmission network, enabling the delivery of clean, domestic electricity nationwide. We are committed to delivering tangible community benefits while ensuring Scotland's grid is prepared for the future.”

The Tylin-Westfield line replacement project forms part of Scottish and Southern Power Grid's $29 billion (£22 billion) “Pathway to 2030” plan, which aims to enhance national energy security and support the UK's transition to net-zero emissions.
