Extreme Pressure Heavy Duty Gear Oil

Gear oil is a kind of important lubricant modulated by petroleum lubricant base oil or synthetic lubricant, adding extreme pressure anti-wear agent and oily agent. It is used in all kinds of gear transmission devices to prevent tooth wear, abrasion, sintering, etc., to extend its service life and improve the efficiency of power transmission. Product Details:Extreme Pressure Heavy Duty Gear Oil

Gear oils need to have excellent anti-wear characteristics, high load capacity, and a suitable viscosity. They should also demonstrate good thermal and oxidative stability, anti-foaming capabilities, efficient water separation, and rust prevention. With gear loads typically being 490 MPa or more, and hyperbolic tooth loads exceeding 2942 MPa, extreme pressure anti-wear agents, commonly sulfur-phosphorus or sulfur-phosphorus-nitrogen additives, are often added to gear oils to prevent oil film failure caused by tooth wear and abrasion. Gear oils constitute approximately 6% to 8% of all lubricating oils.

1. Characteristic

The basic attributes of gear oil consist of an apt viscosity and a suitable viscosity temperature. A viscosity that is relatively high results in a thicker lubricating film, which can withstand higher loads.

Extreme pressure and wear resistance are the most critical properties and defining features of gear oil. Since gear loads often exceed 490 MPa, and hyperbolic tooth surfaces can withstand loads up to 2942 MPa, the inclusion of extreme pressure anti-wear agents in gear oil is essential to prevent tooth surface wear and abrasion caused by the rupture of the oil film. In earlier times, additives like sulfur-chlorine, sulfur-phosphorus-chlorine, sulfur-chlorine-phosphorus-zinc, sulfur-lead, and sulfur-phosphorus-lead were widely used. Nowadays, sulfur-phosphorus or sulfur-phosphorus-nitrogen additives are the preferred choice.

2. Main Indicators

The selection of gear oils hinges on viscosity. In 1983, the SAE established seven grades for automotive gear oils based on their kinematic viscosity at 98.9°C (210°F). Grades 70W, 75W, 80W, and 85W are tailored for winter and cold climates, with minimum usage temperatures of -55°C, -40°C, -26°C, and -12°C, respectively. The three higher grades, 90, 140, and 250, correspond to progressively greater viscosities. In recent years, the focus on energy efficiency has led to the increased use of low-viscosity, thickened oils (multigrade gear oils) suitable for all seasons. The viscosity classification system for industrial gear oils mirrors that of lubricating oils, using the center value of kinematic viscosity at 40°C.
